PHILADELPHIA, PA – The eye-opening athletic talent and the smile that captivated Syracuse fans were once again on display this past weekend, this time in Philadelphia.
CitrusTV was there for Wes Johnson’s 3rd workout for a NBA Team (following workouts with the New Jersey Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves) and Sixers Head Coach Doug Collins had high praise for the former Syracuse Forward…
While also comparing Johnson to Scottie Pippen, Collins added one thing he will have to improve on is ball handling.
Wes says he’s been encouraged by the feedback from the workouts so far.
“It’s a dream right now, and I’m just having fun with it.”
Just two months removed from his decision to go pro, Johnson is projected to be a top 5 pick in the draft. He says he owes a lot of his success to his work at Syracuse.
“After being at Syracuse I’m prepared for anything. Wherever I go they’ll be winners, they got to bring it.”
The possibility of landing in Minnesota who holds the #4 pick and reuniting with close friend and former Orange star, Jonny Flynn has Johnson eager for Thursday night’s draft.
“It would be a dream to play anywhere in the NBA,” Johnson said. “But especially there, especially with Jonny.
While Wes won’t have to wait long tomorrow night to hear his name called he’s hoping to hear the name of former teammate, Andy Rautins, at some point as well.
“I spoke to Andy Friday night,” Johnson said. “He just had a workout with Minnesota and everything went good so I’m really happy for him.”
A possible Syracuse “Big Three” on the T’Wolves?
“Yea that be pretty special,” Johnson chuckled. “That be a little Syracuse connection right there.”
Johnson is obviously quite proud of the place he calls “home.” So how does he want Orange fans to remember him?
Thursday night will be a dream come true for Johnson, who expects to be a winner in whatever uniform he will wear next season.
“I hoping (to be a winner) next year. I’ve got that mindset to prepare for that next year.”
For most in Syracuse he already is.
